What is the SCA Coffee Skills Programme?

The SCA Coffee Skills Programme is an education system aimed to meet the needs of coffee professionals everywhere. It is a controlled and certified system with a curriculum written and updated by the best minds in the coffee industry.

It allows the coffee professional to sit courses in six subject modules and three levels of certifications at locations and times of their choosing, amassing credits each time a certification is successfully passed that count towards the 100 needed for the full Coffee Diploma. It’s your choice on the modules you take to get you to 100 points. Certifications are based on both technical knowledge and practical examinations.

Here at Prufrock we offer the following modules:

  • Introduction to Coffee
  • Barista Skills
  • Brewing

Examination and Certification

At the conclusion of all our SCA courses we conduct the formal examination process, which consists of a practical and a written exam (a pass rate of 60% required). We also provide our students with a considerable collection of resources to take away including comprehensive course notes, access to our online espresso journal, a certificate of attendance and much more.

SCA Certification Fees

In addition to the cost of the course there is an exam and certification fee from the SCA. This fee is not mandatory if you don’t wish to obtain SCA certification, and can also be deferred if you prefer to take the exam at a later date (without having to repeat the course). Fees for SCA members are considerably reduced, so as the annual membership fee is only £100. You may find it worthwhile to become a member as you work through the diploma system.
